Return to Learn 20-21

Greetings Greene County Schools families,

Today, we are sharing a document that includes our draft Return to Learn plan for the reopening of schools for the 20-21 school year.  We want you to be as informed as possible, and it is important that we work together for the children of our community.

I would like to thank you for your patience and support since our abrupt closure last spring.  We know it has been challenging, and we are all looking forward to a new school year.  Planning has been underway for some time.  We have had two task forces to engage in the work to examine instruction and operations.  Our task force members representing parents, staff, leaders, and community partners have been working hard to take your feedback and questions along with the guidance provided by the Governor’s Office, CDC, and the Virginia Department of Education to develop the best plan possible for our students and staff to return to school this fall.

Our priorities in the development of the plan were the health and safety of our students and staff, as much time as possible for in school learning, and prioritizing the needs of our most vulnerable students as well as providing choices for virtual learning to allow parents to make the best possible decisions for their children.  With the current context, it is important that our plan is flexible and adaptable and will be reviewed and updated as conditions change.

You will see that our plan includes 2 options.  We are proposing option 1 for adoption by our school board.  That plan includes students in PK-5 coming to school every day and students in grades 6-12 attending in person two days a week and remaining virtual for the remainder of the time.  A 100% virtual option for all students K-12 is also available should parents not wish for their children to return to in person learning this year.  Our plans include mitigation strategies to maintain the health and safety of our students and staff while providing for in person opportunities.  This also includes a proposal to begin school on Tuesday, August 18.

We will continue to provide new information as it is available.  Please take some time to read the entire plan and all of the information provided.  Questions or comments should be directed to your child’s school or to returntolearn@greenecountyschools.com.

The plan will be presented at next week’s school board meeting and will become final once it is approved.  Our school board meeting will take place Wednesday, July 8 at William Monroe High School (adhering to social distancing and phase 3 requirements).  It will also be live streamed that evening.  Again, we appreciate your patience and flexibility as we do our best to serve our students and families in these highly unusual times.  Thank you and have a great summer!
