Greene County Teacher Expands Opportunities for Students

(Stanardsville, VA) Greene County students with diverse abilities now have an opportunity to play for an organized baseball team. Greene County Public Schools’ adaptive P.E. teacher, Sharon Gregory has developed a Bambino Buddy-Ball league in the community, with some help from the Greene County Youth Center. Players use the fields at The Youth Center, located at 175 Sassafras Lane in Ruckersville, to practice and participate in games. The league’s inaugural game took place on Saturday, October 2, 2021.

Ms. Gregory says participating in a Bambino Buddy-Ball league can not only help students learn how to play baseball, but also develop social skills and gain confidence. Players can receive assistance with game skills like hitting and running bases from a “buddy” volunteer. Organizers are hoping to welcome more buddy volunteers and are encouraging school staff, students, parents, and community members to register.

Ms. Gregory started the league to provide an adapted sports option for families in Greene. She managed a similar league in Culpeper and knew there would be strong interest in the community. She plans to expand activities for students with diverse abilities and hopes the Bambino Bash showcases the dynamics of in season games.

Ms. Gregory anticipates the league’s first season to start in Spring 2022. Greene County has 2 full teams who can compete, and Ms. Gregory is exploring playing other Bambino Buddy-Ball teams in the state.
