Greene County Schools Starts Cybersecurity Program

Stanardsville, VA, October 10, 2018

Greene County Schools continues to think innovatively when it comes to designing educational pathways for students to be prepared for their futures.  One example of this innovative work is the creation of a Cybersecurity program at William Monroe High School.  The Cybersecurity Fundamentals program provides students with principles of data and technology that frame and define cybersecurity.  Students gain insight into the importance of cybersecurity and the integral role of cybersecurity professionals. The interactive, hands on format provides a dynamic learning experience where students explore foundational cybersecurity principles, security architecture, risk management, cyber-attacks, incidents, and emerging information technologies. Students learn the building blocks of cyber-hygiene, digital citizenship, cryptography, software security, and networking fundamentals.  Students also explore popular programming languages used by cybersecurity professionals.  Additionally, students will research career opportunities within the field of cybersecurity.

Ms. Stafford, the course instructor, described her opening lesson for students: “On the first day of school, Cybersecurity students cracked codes, worked collaboratively, and solved problems to "Breakout" of our Escape Room assignment. This set the tone for the objective of the class on day one: we will be working together to think critically, solve problems, and code outside of our comfort zones.”  Ms. Stafford continued, “Students have also presented projects on what Cybersecurity is, who is impacted, why it's important, and researched historical cyber threats. We are currently building Public Service Announcements detailing cyber bullying, digital footprints, and general online safety.”  Greene County Public Schools is excited to offer this experience for students that helps to further expose them to learning that meets the demands of the future workforce, while also engaging them in innovative educational experiences.
