VSBA Showcases for Success Directory
Stanardsville VA., April 8, 2019
The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has released its 23rd annual VSBA Showcases for Success directory, highlighting successful K-12 programs in Virginia’s public schools. Greene County Public Schools is one of 56 school divisions from across the Commonwealth that has programs featured in the directory. Programs from Greene County Schools are:
Last year across our division, we created school-based Innovation Teams of teachers and administrators to explore and integrate innovative teaching into our classrooms to engage all students. The Team at Nathanael Greene Elementary School this year is focused on preparing students for the future. They created a school-wide integrated project grounded in the theme of health and wellness. Students at each grade level are completing projects that frequently integrate technology in meaningful and authentic ways. Students are creating podcasts, virtual museum walks, green screen presentations and more. Nathanael Greene has also launched a Student Innovation Team to allow students the opportunity to work with teachers and peers to integrate technology into the classroom.
New Teacher Induction
Greene County Public Schools believes that recruiting and retaining great educators is key to providing our students with the consistency and quality of education they need to be prepared for the future. Our New Teacher Induction Program is flourishing in its second year. We created a new position dedicated solely to working with our new teachers. As a result, we now have a variety of support systems and professional learning tailored to our new teachers. We provide “digital petting zoos,” structured mentorships, Google Certification training, FlipGrid conversations, a New Teacher Summit, as well as social events. Our New Teacher Support and Mentorship Coordinator also works with our Coordinator of Innovative Programs to integrate innovative teaching in all of our schools to engage students via meaningful integration of technology, personalized learning, opportunities to apply knowledge and creativity, and chances to communicate and collaborate with peers.
Summer Enrichment Academies
Greene County Public Schools is offering Summer Enrichment Academies for the third consecutive year. After receiving great feedback from the community the first two years, the division decided to continue the program. The Academies offer students opportunities to explore unique and engaging topics while exercising their brains during the summer break. The courses feature activities such as creating clay-mation videos, 3D printing, gardening, volunteering in the community, making movies, and learning to play the ukulele. For teachers, the Academies provide a laboratory to try out innovative ideas that they may not have had time for during the school year. The Academies were implemented in coordination with the division’s execution of its strategic plan Innovate 2021. The plan is grounded in the belief that engaging students in learning is key to a successful learning communities.
