Greene County Schools Announces Successful Start to School

(Stanardsville, VA) Greene County Public Schools was excited to welcome back 2,936 students to school on September 8th, 2020.  The GCPS Return to Learn Plan included options for students in grades PK - 5 to attend school 5 full days each week, middle school and high school students to attend 2 full days each week, and the option for all students in grades K - 12 the option to attend the GCPS virtual school.  In total, the school division has welcomed back to school 1,726 students in person over the past week, with the remaining students learning virtually with their dedicated teachers, staff, and family supports.

There have been significant efforts in planning the return to learning for the GPCS School division to include months long coordination between division staff, school staff, families, students, and the GCPS School Board.  These efforts include a strict safety protocol for students and staff attending in person such as requirements for social distancing, mandatory face coverings, and frequent sanitation and disinfecting.  Students and staff have acclimated extremely well over the past week and are enjoying their time back in the classroom with colleagues and friends.  In addition, our School Nutrition staff is excited to offer free breakfast and lunches daily to students. The meals are delivered to students’ classrooms, so they can remain socially distanced. Lastly, the GCPS Transportation team continues to provide school bus transportation for our students attending in-person. All students are required to wear masks and all bus surfaces are sanitized between each run.

The GCPS instructional and technology teams have collaborated closely to ensure that all students enrolled in virtual and in-person learning environments have access to high quality hardware and software and can use the Learning Management Systems with ease. Significant training has occurred over the past four months for teachers and staff to effectively implement the Canvas LMS for all students in grades 4 - 12 and SeeSaw for students in grades K - 3. This implementation ensures that all students are receiving high-quality instruction in both learning delivery methods. Additionally, GCPS is Social and Emotional supports for students to include a 9 week SEL curriculum developed for students and staff that is implemented in the classroom.

In summary, the GCPS School Division is excited to consider the launch of the 2020 - 2021 school year a significant success. We want to extend a special thanks to our committed community, staff, students, and leadership for their continued support and commitment to the students and families of Greene County.  We are excited to continue to refine our Return to Learn Plan to ensure a successful 2020-2021 school year.
