GCPS Opens the Dragons' Closet

(Stanardsville, VA) Greene County Schools is excited to announce the launch of the ‘Dragons' Closet!’ The closet will offer clothes, shoes, coats, and personal care items to all students in need across the division.

Organizers for the initiative say they were driven by the need recognized within schools for a readily accessible supply of personal care items and basic clothing needs. An outpouring of donations and support from fellow members of the school community enabled The Dragon Closet’s debut much sooner than originally anticipated.

School staff are able to submit a request on behalf of a student for a variety of reasons including loss through fire, placement change, or simply a need of clothing (based upon observation, request or report by school staff, family or student). Organizers say utilizing the request system will help them track and replenish the most requested items and sizes. A group of high school students enrolled in an independent living skills course will assist with washing, folding, and organizing donated items.

The closet currently has clothing sizes infant through 3XL adult, shoes of all sizes, and varieties of coats, gloves, scarves, and hats. Organizers say they welcome new or gently used clothes, shoes, and winter apparel. Questions regarding personal care donations and other ways to help this initiative can be directed to Ms. Sarah Baran at sbaran@greenecountyschools.com
