- Religious Exemption
-
Although parents are providing instruction to their child at home through this option, the process to request religious exemption is different than if you choose to homeschool. Parents seeking a religious exemption must petition the school board and show that, by reason of bona fide religious training or belief, the pupil, together with his/her parents, is conscientiously opposed to attendance at school. The term bona fide religious training or belief "does not include essentially political, sociological, or philosophical views or a merely personal code." (22.1-245.B.1, Code of Virginia) Typically parents will make this petition by submitting a letter explaining their desire for religious exemption to the division's Homeschool Coordinator.
Please note - Approvals for religious exemption are per child and not per family.
